Week 23: My baby girl weighs 1 pound 2 ounces…right on track!

At eight inches and slightly over a pound, the baby is the size and shape of a small doll. This week marks the beginning of some serious weight gain. The baby’s weight in the next four weeks alone should double (and it may seem as if mine does too).

The bady is becoming better proportioned each day, and the bones of the middle ear begin to harden. Her daily workout routine includes moving the muscles in the fingers, toes, arms and legs regularly. As a result, I can feel more forceful movement.

At this point, I’ve pretty much adjusted to the fact I’ve got a moving little gymnast inside of me, but now baby’s going to kick up the party a notch because she can hear and react to sounds from the outside world. Sounds like an alarm clock, a thunder roll, or that darned car honking at me across the intersection can actually jar her little ears enough to elicit a kick or violent bout of squirming. Of course this also means that her little ears are picking up the sounds of my voice and those near me. Her little pink taste buds are still growing and her bones are continuing to ossify (harden). The baby’s tiny veins are visible through her translucent yet wrinkly skin. (Think of it this way: she’s been swimming in the equivalent of a long hot bath for the past 23 weeks, so you can’t blame her for being a little prune-like.)
